The Buttered Biscuit

The Buttered Biscuit is our go to place for breakfast in Waynesville NC.   The atmosphere and decor are simple and basic, but the food, well it's amazing.  

The Buttered Biscuit is known locally for their huge "cat head" biscuits with gravy.  They are also well known for their other biscuit sandwiches, pancakes, and waffles. 

The menu at The Buttered Biscuit features a variety of classic breakfast options, as well as some unique dishes like the "Breakfast Bowl," which is a large bowl with hash browns, eggs, sausage or bacon, and gravy.

Our personal favorites are: the breakfast bowls, scrambled eggs with corned beef hash (fried crispy) with biscuits and crazy, and their French Toast.  We love to get the pancakes every so often as well.

The service is friendly, portions are huge, and the prices are very reasonable, making the Buttered Biscuit a great place to start your day.  Others must agree, because it's constantly packed!

Beach Mountain Diner

If you're looking for a classic American diner experience, Beach Mountain Diner in the Hazelwood section of Waynesville is the place to be. 

This retro-style diner serves up all the breakfast classics, including eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, and waffles. The portions are generous, and the prices are affordable.  They even have multiple options of Eggs Benedict.

Beach Mountain Diner is the newest breakfast spot on this list, but has quickly become one of our favorites, and a favorite of locals and visitors as well.  

The atmosphere is cozy and nostalgic, with vintage décor and a jukebox that plays oldies. The Beach Mountain Diner is a great spot for a casual breakfast with friends or family.   

Kornerstone Kafe

For a great breakfast experience, head over to the Kornerstone Kafe.  This charming café serves up all of your breakfast favorites, including omelets, pancakes, French toast, sandwiches, and even breakfast wraps. 

The cafe offers a welcoming atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating options. The interior is decorated with a mix of vintage and modern decor, creating a unique and comfortable ambiance.  Service is excellent and friendly.

Breakfast prices are very reasonable for good old home style food.  Exactly what you would expect at Mama's house.

Crepe and Custard

If you're in the mood for something sweet, the Crepe and Custard is the place to be. This cute Crepe Cafe in Lake Junaluska specializes in sweet and savory crepes, as well as homemade custards.

The menu features a variety of unique crepe options, including the "Maple Bacon" and the "Strawberry Nutella." The service is friendly, and the prices are reasonable.   If you are looking for Gluten Free options, this is the place for you.  They offer a number of Gluten free options.

The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed, with both indoor and outdoor seating options.  The restaurant is also lakeside offering incredible views of Lake Junaluska.   This makes for a great stop after talking a morning walk on the lake, to relax, eat some wonderful crepes and drink a warm cup of coffee.

Haywood 209 Cafe

Last but not least, the Haywood 209 Cafe is a popular breakfast spot located just outside of Waynesville in Clyde, just a few miles outside of Waynesville and just off I-40. 

This cozy restaurant serves a variety of breakfast options, including omelets, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy. The portions are generous, and the prices are affordable.   They also have some specialities, including a Philly Omelet, 209 Breakfast Burrito, and Breakfast bowls.

The service is friendly, and the atmosphere is laid back and casual. The Haywood 209 Cafe is a great spot for a hearty breakfast before a day of exploring the area.

The Best Restaurants in Waynesville NC

Waynesville, North Carolina has a thriving restaurant scene that features a diverse range of dining options, ranging from classic Southern comfort food to international cuisine and innovative fusion dishes.  You foodie's out there will love Waynesville, not only for it's food, but for it's pure charm as well.

In this guide, we will explore some of the best restaurants in Waynesville, highlighting their unique atmospheres, menus, and specialties. The Sweet Onion

We have been dining at The Sweet Onion restaurant in downtown Waynesville since shortly after they opened.  "The Onion" is by far our favorite place to eat and offers the perfect combination of excellent food, specials, exceptional customer service, and atmosphere.

Their menu is full of fantastic tasting items and they have daily specials as well.  While we generally order the specials, here are some of our favorite picks from the menu:

For Appetizers, we love the Ahi Tuna Sashimi and Panko Encrusted Shrimp.  The Tuna is seared to perfection, and literally melts in your mouth.   The Panko Encrusted Shrimp are huge, flavorful, and come with a sweet and tangy sauce.  For some variety, ask for their in-house made Cocktail sauce, also delicious.

For Dinner, we generally get their daily specials.  When we do choose from the menu, we really enjoy their crab cakes.   In fact, we've had crab cakes all over, and these are by far the best.  Very little filler, and mainly just crab.  The lemon basil aioli served on the side is just scrumptious.  

Other notable menu items we enjoy are the Shrimp and Grits, Pecan encrusted Mountain Trout (locally sourced), and Sweet Onion Pot Roast.   But honestly, we have never had anything bad on the menu.   Even the Pecan Chicken Melt sandwich is amazing.

If you get a salad, you'll love the selection of dressings.  All of them are made in house, including their popular signature Sweet Onion vinaigrette.

The Sweet Onion is open for lunch (with lunch specials) and dinner.  They offer a full-bar, with excellent bar tenders, craft beers on tap and an extensive wine list to complement your dinner as well.

You'll want to make reservations in advance, as the wait times are often long due to their popularity.

Singletree Heritage Kitchen

Fairly new to the Waynesville Restaurant scene, but making big waves is Single Tree Heritage Kitchen in downtown Waynesville.   Singletree is an upscale restaurant that serves delicious, unique and innovative meals, all crafted by head chef and owner Josh Weeks.

The interior design is elegant and romantic yet has a casual and warm as well.  You'll certainly feel comfortable dining for any occasion.   Dining attire is very casual, although if you want to dress nicer, you won't feel out of place. 

We have eaten at Singletree a couple of times, and enjoyed our experience and meals very much.  While there are some staple items on the menu, the menu does vary.  

Some of the items we've enjoyed are the crab fritters and cornmeal battered NC Shrimp for appetizers.  For dinner, the Halibut fish and NY Strip steak are both absolutely excellent.  The steak is huge!   

They have some wonderful in-house made desserts as well, including the chocolate torte, and Cherry sticky cake with ice cream.  Both out of this world.

Singletree has a full bar, beer and an extensive wine list for you chose from as well.

Birchwood Hall Southern Kitchen

Birchwood Hall Southern Kitchen is another upscale restaurant located in the heart of downtown Waynesville on Main Street.   From their website, Birchwood Hall offers a "farm-to-table approach deeply rooted in Southern tradition.  Each dish pays homage to the down-home warmth of Southern cuisine with an eclectic, modern twist."  

In our numerous times dining with them, Birchwood Hall delivers exactly as they describe.  They offer a unique menu and convenient location, combined with an attractive and wood themed dining room and bar.   

While the menu is unique and their own, the main items on the menu are familiar comfort food types of items.  Items that everyone always enjoys, but with Birchwood's own "flair" to give it that unique taste.

Some of our favorite items from their menu are the Goat Cheese Fritters with pepper Jelly (an incredibly delicious combination), Birchwood Burger, Sunburst pan-seared Trout, Meatloaf, and the country-friend Portabella (trust us, its really good).

Now, we aren't fried-chicken fans, but we've heard from many that are, that their fried chicken is the best around.

Overall, we have found the food at Birchwood Hall to be really good, and the service as well.  The dining room is comfortable and casual, but yet has a more upscale tone without going over the top.  They have a huge bar that is fully stocked.  

You'll feel comfortable at Birchwood Hall dressed up or dressed casual.

The Chef's Table

Almost hidden on a side street in downtown Waynesville, The Chef's Table delivers fine dining at its best, coupled with fresh, seasonal, local foods and produce.  All paired with a worldwide wine selection.   Reservations are strongly recommended.

Executive Chef/Owner Josh Monroe maintains a high-standard for cooking excellence that is enjoyed by both locals and visitors.  What the restaurant lacks in size, it makes up for in excellent food and a cozy/romantic atmosphere.

The menu is constantly updated and refreshed to reflect local crops.  This means that you may have have a variety of selections each time you visit. 

The excellent menu options include: Shrimp and Grits, Steaks, Duck, Poultry items, deconstructed Lasagna, Lamb, and Fish.   Again, the menu changes, so calling out specific menu items isn't appropriate, however, everything is delicious and fresh tasting.

They offer over 250 different wines, beer, a full bar, and a scotch menu as well, so you can pair you favorite adult beverage with your meal.

The Cuban Guy

Looking for a quick no frills meal, that is absolutely delish?   The Cuban Guy might just to the spot for you.   This nice but simple restaurant serves up some of the best cuban food in the area.  

The Cuban Guy is on our lunchtime favorites short list, and always delivers excellent food that is fresh, hot, and delicious.  The best part?  The food is always delivered with a smile by the owner Vero and her family.   It's always good to see them.

The Cuban Guy is just off Main Street in Downtown Waynesville, and almost hidden in small plaza.   Once inside you'll find a small but nicely decorated and cuban themed dining area, that also offers outdoor seating in the summer.  

The Cuban Guy serves authentic Cuban food, including Cuban sandwiches, Picadillo, Pork bowls, ham Cróquets and more.   They even serve breakfast now as well.

Not sure what to get?  Our favorites are the Cuban Sandwich, Cróquets, and Picadillo.   Be sure to grab some hot sauce as well.

Watami Sushi & Noodles

We love Sushi.  It wasn't always one of our favorites, but over the years it's really grown on us.   Good sushi was hard to find in Waynesville, and the only great sushi restaurant closed a couple of years ago.  

Fortunately, Watamai Sushi & Noodles opened, offering good Asian food and excellent Sushi.

The menu offers an array of popular Chinese, Japanese, and Thai favorites.   They also offer a number of noodle dishes as well, including Noodle Soup with various protein and noodle options.   For you Pho fans, the noodle soup options are similar.

Our favorites from the menu are the General Tso's chicken, Pad Thai, Chow Fun, and Thai Fried Rice.  But everything on the menu is really good.

Where Watami really shines though is their Sushi.   They even have a Sushi bar, so you can see the chefs making your Sushi fresh to order.   We've tried nearly all of the various rolls on the menu, with our favorites being the Blue Ridge Roll and Mango Roll.

If you prefer to order your sushi and sashimi ala carte, they have many options as well including party and group trays.

Watami recently expanded and now offers a lot more indoor seating, and and outdoor seating area as well for when the weather is warmer.  More outdoor seating is a welcome addition to the Waynesville restaurant scene.

Haywood Smokehouse

Haywood Smokehouse, located in the Hazelwood area of Waynesville NC serves up some of the best Texas Style BBQ in Western NC (they even have ice-cold Shiner!).   Given their popularity and the fact that they have expanded to multiple restaurants shows that we're not the only ones who think this.

The restaurant is located in an old two-story home in the historic Hazelwood district of Waynesville NC, just off the highway.  

Haywood Smokehouse really goes all out to provide their customers with exceptional BBQ.   In addition to on-site smoked chopped pork, chopped chicken, turkey, ribs, and melt in your mouth brisket.  They also have made from scratch smoke sausage, and in-house made sauces as well.  

All of the meats are dry-rubbed using their own in-house rub.   They have many different in-house made sauces to choose from as well, including notables like Georgia Fire and Hot Red if you enjoy spicy.

Their brisket has the perfect dark and flavorful park, that isn't as tangy and spicy as some Texas Brisket we've had, but still has a sufficient bite to it.   The meat underneath is what you would expect, smoky, tender and juicy.  

They also offer a number of sides to complement your meal, including collards, mac-n-cheese, fries, and baked beans.

Most of our family prefers the chopped pork on a sandwich, with collards, mac-n-cheese, and fries.   But a few of us love the brisket, which is excellent straight up.

Los Amigos

Contrary to a few other online reviews, Waynesville offers a number of Latin American dining options, and specifically Mexican.  Los Amigos is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Waynesville.  They a menu full of options, great drinks, excellent service, and freshly made, authentic Mexican food.

Los Amigos moved to a new and very nice location, that offers inside and outside dining options, with a full bar as well.   While not huge, the dining area is roomy, clean, and inviting.

Los Amigos offers anything from taco salads to piping hot fajitas.  They even have a number of options for vegetarians and those trying to eat more healthy (like us).

Everything is very good, but we thoroughly enjoy the shrimp and fish tacos, which are served topped with fresh Pico De Gallo.  The Enchildadas Verdes is also excellent, and topped with fresh cilantro.

Bogarts Restaurant & Tavern

Last, but certainly not least is Bogart's Restaurant & Tavern, a restaurant staple for Waynesville and Haywood County.   Bogart's has been serving great food and steaks to locals and visitors for more than 45 years, and is very popular with locals and visitors.

Bogart's is located on Main street near downtown Waynesville, and has it's own parking.  The building resembles a barn, and the wood and bear themed dining area is cozy and romantic, but often loud due to how busy they often are.  There is a large bar area as well that offers beer and wine selections, along with food from the menu.

The dining area is two floors, with the upstairs area accommodating larger parties.  Kids will enjoy finding and counting all of the stuffed bears throughout the restaurant.

Bogart's specializes in great steaks at a reasonable price, but they also have many other items on their large menu as well, including sandwiches, chicken (including wings), salads, and soups.

Bogarts is busy, so you'll want to get their early to get in without a long wait, and to also get a decent parking space.  

Our favorite menu items include the Onion Rings, fried pickles, steaks of course, the smothered chicken, and their burgers.   To be honest, we have tried many burgers in the Waynesville area, and Bogart's has the best burger.  Their burgers are the reason we go.   We enjoy the Mushroom and Swiss and Cheeseburger with bacon.

They also have a large number of sandwich options as well, that are excellent.  For those looking for healthy options, they have salads, a black bean burger, grilled chicken options, and a veggie sandwich.  They even provide live music during peak season, check their Facebook page for details.

If you haven't tried Bogart's, you haven't really experienced local dining in Waynesville NC.   Y'all need to fix that!

The Patio Bistro

Looking for a cozy and charming spot to enjoy a delicious meal in Waynesville, North Carolina?   Then you must check out the Patio Bistro, tucked away on South Main Street.  The locally--owned bistro offers a welcoming atmosphere and an extensive menu that will delight your taste buds and offers healthy eating options.

Panacea Coffeehouse, Cafe & Roastery

Panacea is one of the most popular coffeehouses and cafes in Waynesville, and for good reason. Panacea not only serves up excellent coffee, teas, and light food, but they are also located in an old warehouse in the historic Frog Level district of Waynesville.  Together, this makes for a really cool and historic spot to enjoy great coffee.

Orchard Coffee

Orchard Coffee is a small, bright, open and cozy cafe that serves a variety of coffee and tea drinks, along with made from scratch baked goods and light food.   They are passionate about coffee, and it shows through everything they offer and do.  This includes cool artistic designs on the top of your cappuccino!

Our favorite menu items include their lattes, scones, and strawberry toast.  Orchard Coffee is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery while sipping on a latte in a casual bright, and trendy location.

Third Bay Filling Station

Third Bay Filling Station is a small, locally-owned cafe located in downtown Waynesville. The cafe is located in an old historic service station, hence the name. 

The cafe offers a full coffee bar along with a variety of breakfast and lunch items including pastries, muffins, salads and sandwiches.  Third Bay Filling Station also offers a variety of daily specials, which are always a hit with customers.  The cafe's coffee bar offers a variety of coffee drinks, as well as tea, espresso, and smoothies. 

Third Bay Filling Station is a great place to go for a quick and delicious coffee, expresso or fresh meal "on the go".   No indoor seating is a available, but they do offer limited outdoor seating.

Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters is a locally owned coffee shop located in the historic Hazelwood area of Waynesville, North Carolina. Bosu's Wine Shop is a charming wine shop and cafe located in downtown Waynesville.  Bosu's that specializes in unique and hard-to-find wines from around the world. 

The store's selection of wines is carefully curated by its owners to offer customers a diverse range of options, from rare and exclusive bottles to more affordable, everyday wines.

Frog Level Brewing Company

Frog Level Brewing is a popular micro-brewery located in the historic Frog Level district of Waynesville.  With a focus on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, Frog Level Brewing offers a wide variety of locally brewed, unique and flavorful beers that are very popular with locals and visitors.

Frog Level Brewing offering 21 taps, indoor and outdoor areas for enjoyment of beer, food and live music.  In addition to beer and wine, they offer great testing pub fare favorites as well.

Frog Level Brewing offers a wide range of beers, from hoppy IPAs to malty stouts and may other beers in between.   They offer special brews and seasonal brews as well.   

The brewery and pub is housed in a historic building that dates back to the early 20th century, and the interior features rustic wood paneling and cozy seating areas. Visitors can also enjoy outdoor seating on the brewery's spacious patio, which overlooks Richland Creek.  The casual, dog-friendly, and creek side atmosphere is hard to beat.

Frog Level Brewing is a great place to relax, enjoy the creek and views, some live music, and of course great beer and food.   Frog Level Brewing is one of our favorite places to hang out on the weekends.

Boojum Brewing Company

Boojum Brewing is a well-known and award winning craft brewery located in the heart of downtown Waynesville. The brewery has quickly become a favorite among locals and tourists alike for its delicious beer, beautiful taproom, welcoming atmosphere, and great food.

The popular taproom, located in a beautifully restored historic building features a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with plenty of seating for visitors to relax and enjoy beer and food. The brewery also provides a spacious outdoor deck, which is perfect for enjoying the beautiful outdoor weather of Waynesville and is also pet friendly.

Boojum Brewing's beers are brewed in small batches, using only the finest ingredients, to ensure maximum flavor and freshness. The brewery offers a wide variety of beers including IPAs, stouts, porters, sours, blonds, and more. 

The Taproom offers many of their brews on-tap and also has a full-bar.   The taproom has ample seating for small and large parties, and their menu offers some really excellent pub to restaurant style food.   Some of our favorites include their Whistle pigs, Boojum Burger, Chicken Quesadilla, and the Cuban Sandwich.   

Overall, Boojum Brewing is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves craft beer and a great atmosphere. With its delicious beer, beautiful taproom, large dining area, and full bar, this brewery has something for everyone and is one of our favorite places to have lunch and dinner in the downtown area.

The Scotsman Public House

Scotsman Public House in downtown Waynesville is a quaint and cozy and exceptionally decorated Scottish Pub that is both a bar and restaurant that specializes in Scottish cuisine. 

The menu at Scotsman offers a large selection of diverse items.  They offer traditional Scottish dishes, such as haggis, neeps and tatties, and Scotch eggs as one would expect. They also serve American classics like burgers and sandwiches.

The restaurant's decor is a reflection of its Scottish roots, with Scottish memorabilia adorning the walls. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a casual night out with friends.

One standout feature of Scotsman is their extensive selection of whiskies. They have over 200 different types of whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, and the United States.

They also have a wide selection of beer, wine with a focus on craft beer from local and regional breweries. They have the largest selection of beers in Haywood county, with more than 50 different beers on tap.  Many patrons enjoy sitting at the bar and chatting with the friendly bartenders,  watching sports on the TVs, or playing games at the many available tables.

Mad Anthony's is actually both a Taproom and a pizza restaurant called Doughboys, offering numerous specialty Pizzas, sandwiches, salads, wings, and appetizers.   Their Pizza is some of the best in the area, if not the best.

In addition to its regular menu, Mad Anthony's Taproom & Restaurant also hosts special events such as live music performances, trivia nights, and beer tastings. The bar is popular among locals and visitors alike and is a great spot for a casual dinner or a night out with friends.   We really enjoy hanging out here, grabbing one of their excellent Pizza's with a cold beer.

Pub 319

Pub 319 is a very popular bar and pub located in downtown Waynesville. With its casual decor and friendly local atmosphere, it's a great spot to hang out with friends or go out on a date.

Pub319 is mainly a bar, and offers a large selection of beers, craft beers, cocktails and bar type food.    The bar is large and tacks up a large portion of the Pub 319 space, and is surrounded by TVs showing various sports events and shows depending on the day.

The food menu at Pub 319 has a range of foo options from truffle fries and fried pickles to more mainstream items like burgers and sandwiches.  They also have frequent specials as well.

For special events and holidays, they generally have special drinks, food, activities, and live music.

Overall, Pub 319 is a great bar destination for anyone looking for great drinks and food in a trendy atmosphere, it's easy to see why this spot is so popular with locals and visitors as well.

Sauced Bar and Pizzeria is a bar and restaurant located in the heart of downtown Waynesville. The restaurant is well-known for its delicious pizza and unique sauces, which are all made in-house with fresh and local ingredients.

The menu at Sauced Bar and Pizzeria features a wide range of options to choose from, including a variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and, of course, pizza. Their pizzas are the star of the show and are available in both traditional and specialty options.    They even have tater tots (yes we love tater tots).

In addition to their excellent food, Sauced Bar and Pizzeria also a full and large bar that serves selection of local beers, wines, and cocktails. The restaurant's cozy and casual atmosphere make it the perfect place to gather with friends and family.

One of the things we really enjoy about Sauced is the outdoor seating, and the ability for them to open up the large front window on nice days.  There are seats facing out, that provides incredible views of the surrounding mountains, and activities along main street.   We really enjoy their salads, burgers, tacos, and pizza.
