Forest Heritage Scenic Byway Map

Crossing Under the Blue Ridge Parkway

After passing through Bethel NC and Cruso NC (which was devastated by the flooding that occurred in 2021), you'll begin to climb steeply up the mountain, until you reach and cross under the Blue Ridge Parkway.  

A few miles before reaching the parkway (shortly after the road begins to climb steeply up), you'll see a beautiful waterfall coming out of the side of the mountain and roadside.  Be sure to slow up and roll your windows down to enjoy the beautiful sounds.

After crossing under the Parkway, you'll begin a steep decent back down the mountain and into Pisgah National Forest.

Cradle of Forestry

The Cradle of Forestry is a historic site located in Pisgah National Forest and is considered to be the birthplace of forest conservation in the United States and is known as the "Cradle of Forestry" because it was here that the first school of forestry was established in 1898.

Visitors to the Cradle of Forestry can explore the history of forestry and conservation in the United States through a variety of exhibits, displays, and guided tours. The area features several historic buildings and structures, including the original Forestry School, which has been restored and converted into a museum.  There is even an old steam train engine.

In addition to the historical exhibits, visitors can also explore the natural beauty of the Pisgah National Forest through hiking trails and nature walks. The Cradle of Forestry offers a unique combination of history and nature that makes it a popular destination for visitors to western North Carolina.

Sliding Rock

Sliding Rock is a natural waterslide located along the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway. The waterfall is about 60-foot long and slopes downward into a small pool.  The large boulder the waterfall runs down has been worn smooth by the water flowing down it. Visitors can slide down the natural rock and waterfall and plunge into a 6-7 foot deep pool at the bottom.  This is an incredibly popular summer spot for swimming and outdoor recreation.

The water flowing over Sliding Rock is from a mountain stream and is quite cold, making it a refreshing way to cool off on hot summer days. There are lifeguards on duty during the summer months to ensure the safety of visitors.  There is a small fee for entry.

Again, Sliding Rock is VERY busy during peak summer months, so expect large crowds and limited parking.  You'll want want to get there early or late in the day.

Looking Glass Falls

Looking Glass Falls is a popular and majestic waterfall located in Pisgah National Forest, near Brevard and along the byway. The falls drop 60 feet over a rock cliff into a large pool at the base, making it a popular spot for swimming and wading in the summer.

The name of the falls comes from Looking Glass Rock, a nearby mountain with a reflective surface that is said to resemble a mirror or looking glass.

The waterfall is accessible from a parking area directly roadside along the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway. The falls are visible from the road and a short walk down a paved trail leads visitors to a viewing platform overlooking the falls for a closer look.  You can walk further down to reach the water and the base of the falls.

Looking Glass Falls is a popular attraction for visitors to Pisgah National Forest and is a great spot for nature photography, picnicking, and swimming on a hot summer day.

Brevard NC

Brevard is a small town located in western North Carolina, USA. It is nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is often referred to as the "Land of Waterfalls" due to the large number of cascading falls and pristine rivers in the surrounding area.

Brevard is home to a vibrant arts and music scene, with numerous galleries, live music venues, and festivals throughout the year. It also serves as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, with easy access to Pisgah National Forest and nearby attractions like DuPont State Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

In the downtown area, visitors can explore a variety of boutique shops, restaurants, and breweries. The town is also known for its charming, tree-lined streets and historic architecture, including the iconic white squirrels that can be spotted throughout the area.

Rosman NC

Rosman is a small town located in Transylvania County and has a population of around 600 people.  The town is surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and picturesque waterfalls. 

Rosman has a rich history and cultural heritage. The town was founded in the late 19th century and was primarily a logging community for many years. Today, visitors can explore the Transylvania Heritage Museum, which showcases the region's history, art, and culture.

Rosman is also known for its close proximity to Gorges State Park, which offers even more opportunities for outdoor adventures and a number of different waterfalls. 

To continue on the Forest Scenic Byway, at Rosman, travelers will go north on Highway 215 from Highway 64.

Living Waters - 3 Waterfalls

The first point of interest on Highway 215 is Living Waters Ministry.  This privately owned Christian outreach ministry has 3 different large waterfalls, and a few smaller unnamed falls.  There is a trail that will take you to all of them.  

While the ministry is privately owned, they owners are kind enough to allow the public access.  Just be kind and leave no trace when visiting.

The first two waterfalls are Mill Shoal Falls and French Broad Falls.  These duel waterfalls are just a short walk down the trail near and next to the old mill.  The waterfalls are gorgeous, and you can swim in the pools below as well.  Even better is the fact that they are next to an old mill, making this a a popular spot for photographers.

You can continue down the trail to see a number of smaller waterfalls, finally reaching Cathedral Falls, which is in a rock "cathedral".

Living Waters Ministry is definitely worth the stop when traveling along the Forest Scenic Byway.  After leaving Living Waters Ministry, you'll continue north on Highway 215 and begin to climb up in elevation, heading towards the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Courthouse Falls

For those that don't mind taking a bit of an excursion and hike, Courthouse falls is a fairly short and moderate hike out to a beautiful waterfall.  

To reach Courthouse Falls, visitors will follow a forest service road for about 5 miles and then embark on a short and moderate hike through the woods. The trail meanders creekside through a beautiful forest.

To reach the falls, you head down a switch back to the left, down the trail a bit, and then finally take some steep stairs down to the bottom of the falls.  

Courthouse Falls is about 60' tall, and flows over a steep rock cliff into a dark pool at the bottom.  The falls and pool are surrounded by steep rock faces all around.   The pool at the bottom is a popular swimming area in the summer.

Courthouse Falls, located in Transylvania County, derives its name from Devil's Courthouse, a distinct rock formation nearby. Devil's Courthouse is known for its imposing presence and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Dill Falls

Dill Falls is just a few miles further on Highway 215 and again about 5 miles back into the woods along a forest service road.   The hike is short and easy to moderate.  

Dill Falls is very photogenic and well known for its graceful cascade as water tumbles down a series of rock ledges. The falls are framed by dense forest, which is pretty year round, but exceptionally so during peak fall colors.

Once you arrive at Dill Falls, you will be greeted by a 60+ foot waterfall with multiple cascades into a small pool at the bottom.   The creek then flows over a number of smaller cascades down to the trail where you will first see Dill Falls.  

After returning back onto Highway 215, you'll continue north.  The elevation gain here is step as you wind your way up to the Parkway.   As you get close, there will be some beautiful views on the right side of the road, and you can also see Devil's Courthouse.

Blue Ridge Parkway and Highway 215

You'll soon reach the Blue Ridge Parkway, and cross under it.   At this point you can either catch the parkway back to Waynesville or continue on Highway 215.  If you're looking for big scenic views, the parkway will be your best option.  If you prefer more wooded scenic views, creeks and some waterfalls, staying on 215 is the way to go.

Triple Arch Bridge

This area of Highway 215 is full of waterfalls, some roadside but most require a short hike.  We highly recommend you visit our waterfalls guide if you're interested in exploring these waterfalls on your travels.

After passing the Parkway, you'll soon cross over Triple Arch Bridge as the locals call it.   This bridge was built out of stone in the early 1900s, and has 3 arches allowing the creek below it to flow under.   There is a small parking area here, and trails going down below the bridge for better views.

Sunburst Falls

Sunburst Falls is a 40' tall roadside waterfall located along the West Fork of the Pigeon River in the Pisgah National Forest.

The falls are easily accessible from Highway 215, which crosses the river just below the falls. The upper portion of the falls is visible from the road, and there is a small parking area on the south side of the bridge where visitors can park and get a closer look. A short "scramble" trail leads down to the base of the falls, where visitors can get a refreshing spray from the water.

Sunburst Falls is especially beautiful in the fall, when the leaves on the surrounding trees are changing color.

Sunburst Swimming Hole

Sunburst Swimming Hole is a popular swimming hole located in the Pisgah National Forest off Highway 215.  Highway 215 passes right by the swimming hole, and crosses the river just below.

The swimming hole is located on the West Fork of the Pigeon River, about 15 miles from Waynesville NC.  There is a small parking area above the bridge where visitors can park and easily access the swimming hole.

Sunburst swimming hole is a beautiful emerald green color and is surrounded by large boulders. The water is clear and cold, and there is a small waterfall that cascades into the swimming hole.

The swimming hole is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and it is a great place to cool off on a hot summer day.  This makes for a nice family stopping point when traveling the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway.

Lake Logan

As you continue to drive along Highway 215, you'll notice a large and beautiful body of water on your left surrounded by mountains. This is Lake Logan, a popular local destination for fishing, swimming, and boating. The lake and scenery are absolutely stunning.

If you want to stop and enjoy the views, or take a few photos, there are a couple of pull-offs where you can park.  Just watch for traffic.   

After visiting Lake Logan, the drive will continue along Highway 215 and back to Bethel NC where you can return to Waynesville.  This wraps up your beautiful scenic drive along the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway.

Tips for Enjoying the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway near Waynesville

To make the most of drive, there are a few tips to keep in mind:

Plan ahead - Research the drive ahead of time to ensure you know what to expect, including any closures or construction.  While our guide will definitely help, we do recommend bringing a map on your phone or a printed map.  Cell Service can be a bit spotty.

Bring snacks and water - Many of these drives pass through remote areas, so it's a good idea to bring along plenty of snacks and water.

Be mindful of wildlife - The area around Waynesville is home to a variety of wildlife, including bears and deer. Drive slowly and keep an eye out for animals crossing your path.

Take your time - Scenic drives are meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, so don't rush through them. Take your time and enjoy the views and stop along the way to not only better see the scenery, but to stretch your legs as well.

Stop often - Many of these scenic drives offer overlooks and pull-offs, so take advantage of them and stop often to take in the scenery.  Be sure to take lots of photos as well to remember your visit and share with friends and family.

Where is the The Great Smoky Mountains Scenic Byway from Waynesville?

From Waynesville, the Oconoluftee visitor center in the Great Smoky Mountains National park is the starting point for the Great Smoky Mountains Scenic Byway in North Carolina.  The visitor center is about 45 minutes from Waynesville.

The fastest way is to take the Smoky Mountains Expressway from Waynesville (Highway 74) to Cherokee, and catch 441 to the Oconoluftee Visitor center.   That drive is about 45 minutes.

The most scenic way, and the way we love to go, is by going through Maggie Valley on Highway 19 (Soco Rd), and catching the Blue Ridge Parkway at Soco Gap, then driving on the parkway to the Oconoluftee Visitor Center.  It's a about a 10-15 minute longer drive, but well worth it for the scenery.

Oconoluftee Visitor Center and Farm Village

The Oconaluftee Visitor Center is a popular stop for visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  

The Visitor Center offers a range of resources and information for visitors to the park, including exhibits, maps, brochures, and helpful staff who can answer questions and provide guidance on hiking trails, scenic drives, and other attractions.

One of the highlights of the Oconaluftee Visitor Center is the Mountain Farm Museum, which showcases the life and culture of early settlers in the area. Visitors can explore a variety of historic structures, including a farmhouse, barn, springhouse, and blacksmith shop, and learn about traditional crafts and farming practices.  The structures are all original, and were brought in and re-assembled from various places around the park.

In addition to the Mountain Farm Museum, the Oconaluftee Visitor Center also offers access to the Oconaluftee River Trail, a scenic hike that follows the river through the park and offers opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography.  This is one of the few trails that are dog friendly.

Mingus Mill

Mingus Mill is located just off Newfound Gap road, and is a beautiful and fascinating historic site.  The mill has a rich history and showcases the craftsmanship and technology of early milling.  

You'll find the mill just a short distance into the national park, past the Oconoluftee Visitor center on the left.  There is a large parking area, restrooms, an a short trail leading out to the mill.

Mingus Mill, named after its builder, John Mingus, was constructed in the late 18th century, around 1886, and has since become an iconic landmark. It is situated near the Oconaluftee River and surrounded by beautiful Smoky Mountain scenery, making it a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts alike.

What makes Mingus Mill truly unique is its design and operational method. The mill is a water-powered grist mill, but it uses a turbine, which was leading edge technology at the time.  The turbine harnesses the power of water to grind grains such as corn into flour.   It was far more efficient and powerful than traditional water wheel based mills.

Visiting Mingus Mill allows you to step back in time and witness the ingenuity of early engineering. Inside the mill, you'll find a variety of original equipment and machinery, including the grinding stones used to mill the grains. The skilled craftsmen of the past built these machines with great precision and attention to detail.

During the summer, the mill is active with a millwright, and you can see and experience the mill in operation, and buy flour and corn meal ground there at the mill.

Apart from the mill itself, the surrounding area offers additional attractions. You can take a leisurely stroll along the nature trails that wind through the scenic landscape, providing opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. 

Oconaluftee Baptist Church at Smokemont

As you travel along Newfound Gap Road through the scenic Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one noteworthy stop worth exploring is the Oconaluftee Baptist Church (also call Lufty Baptist Church) located in Smokemont. This historic church holds significance both in terms of its architecture and its cultural heritage.

The Oconaluftee Baptist Church stands as a testament to the religious heritage and community spirit of the region. Constructed in 1912, the church's architectural style reflects the simplicity and charm of early 20th-century rural churches. Its modest white exterior, adorned with a simple steeple, blends with its natural surroundings.

Stepping inside the church, you'll be transported back in time. The interior features wooden pews, original wooden floors, and rustic decorations. There is even an old "dual" outhouse out back!

Smokemont Riding Stables

Just down from Lufy Baptist Church is a real hidden Gem, Smokemont Riding Stables where you can ride through the beautiful Great Smoky Mountain National Park on horseback!

Smokemont Riding Stables is an amazing equestrian facility located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. If you have a love for horses and enjoy exploring the great outdoors, this is the perfect place to visit.  Even if you're like me (Larry) and not a huge horse fan, this is truly a wonderful experience.

The stables offer a range of horseback riding experiences, allowing you to embark on guided trail rides through the scenic beauty of the national park. As you saddle up and hit the trails, you'll be immersed in the breathtaking landscapes, lush forests, and picturesque mountain views that the Smokies are known worldwide for.

The stables provide well-trained horses that are suitable for riders of all levels, whether you're a seasoned equestrian or a first-time rider. The experienced guides and wranglers are there to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the ride.  They are truly amazing and patient.

As you meander along the trails, you'll have the chance to spot wildlife, hear the sounds of nature, and breathe in the fresh mountain air. The trails vary in length and difficulty, catering to different preferences and riding abilities. Whether you opt for a leisurely ride or a more adventurous trek, the is an experience you will not want to miss.  We highly recommend it!

Newfound Gap

One of the highlights of the Great Smoky Mountains Scenic Byway is Newfound Gap.  

On September 2, 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt stood right here at Newfound Gap and opened the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during a dedication ceremony.  He delivered remarks emphasizing the importance of protecting this incredible natural landscape and providing access to it for people from all walks of life.  These are values and traditions the park honors today.

Newfound Gap is the lowest drivable pass through the National Park and is located at the Tennessee-North Carolina border.  The "gap" and overlook are at 5,046 feet in elevation.  This large overlook offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.  

From Newfound Gap, you can see as far as Clingmans Dome, the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains. Newfound Gap is also an access point for the Appalachian Trail.  Visitors can take a short walk or hike on the AT, and claim they've walked the Appalachian Trail!

Clingmans Dome

Located just across from Newfound Gap, you'll find the 7-mile long access road for Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at an elevation of 6,643 feet.

The parking area offers incredible long range views of the surround smoky mountains, and visitors can reach the top of Clingmans Dome via a steep, half-mile paved trail that leads to an observation tower at the top of the mountain. The tower offers 360-degree views.

While the views are gorgeous, and the hike worth it, we would be remiss to not warn visitors about how steep the trail up is.  There are lots of benches for resting, but it's the toughest 1/2 mile hike you'll take pretty much anywhere.

In addition to the observation tower, there is a visitor center at the base of the trail, which offers exhibits, information, and restrooms for visitors. The area around Clingmans Dome is also popular for hiking, with a variety of trails ranging from short, easy walks to challenging backcountry treks.  The Appalachian Trail crosses near the observation dome.

Chimney's Picnic Area

The Chimney Picnic Area is a popular picnic area in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, located along the Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg, TN and Newfound Gap. This scenic picnic area is situated near the banks of creek, surrounded by lush forests and stunning mountain vistas.

The Chimney Picnic Area features a number of picnic tables, grills, and restrooms for visitors to use, as well as easy access to the creek for swimming, wading, fishing, and other water activities. 

One of the main attractions of the Chimney Picnic Area is the historic Chimneys, a pair of towering rock formations that rise up from the surrounding forests. The Chimneys are visible from several locations within the picnic area and offer a unique perspective on the natural beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Sugarlands Visitor Center

The Sugarlands Visitor Center is one of the main visitor centers in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, located near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The center serves as a main entry point into the national park and provides a wealth of information about the park's natural and cultural history, as well as a variety of educational programs and exhibits.

At the visitor center, guests can pick up maps, guides, and brochures to help plan their visit to the park, as well as purchase books, souvenirs, and other items related to the Smokies. The center also features a museum exhibit that showcases the natural and cultural history of the park, including displays on wildlife, geology, and the human history of the region.

Sugarlands Visitor Center offers a variety of educational programs, including ranger-led walks and talks, as well as a Junior Ranger program for kids. The center also serves as a starting point for many of the park's popular hiking trails, including the Laurel Falls Trail and the Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail.

The visitor center is also the last stop along the Great Smoky Mountains Scenic Byway.  From here you can continue on to Gatlinburg, or turn around and head back to Waynesville.

Accessing the Blue Ridge Parkway from Waynesville NC

The Blue Ridge Parkway can be easily accessed from Waynesville NC at Balsam Gap, just outside of Waynesville.  Just take the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway (US-23/US-74) towards Cherokee.  After about 4 miles, watch for the Parkway entry signs on the right, and turn right for the parkway access road.

At the Parkway, you can go left to Asheville or go right to Cherokee.  Both are beautiful, and have their scenic merits and stopping points.

Blue Ridge Parkway - Waynesville to Asheville

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic road that runs through the Blue Ridge Mountains, spanning 469 miles through  North Carolina and Virginia.

For those traveling the section of the parkway from Waynesville to Asheville in North Carolina, there are several points of interest and attractions to explore.  You're also in for a real treat, as it's one of the most beautiful sections of the entire Blue Ridge Parkway

The drive from Waynesville to Asheville covers a distance of approximately 30 miles and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests. Along the way, visitors can stop at several scenic overlooks and take in panoramic views of the landscape.

Highest Point on the Parkway, Richland Balsam Overlook

The highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway is located at Richland Balsam at 6,053 feet in elevation.  This makes it the highest point on the entire Blue Ridge Parkway.

At the Richland Balsam overlook, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests, as well as access to several hiking trails and picnic areas at the secondary overlook a little further down the parkway. Richland Balsam Trail is a 1.5-mile round-trip hike that leads to the summit of Richland Balsam and offers excellent views along the way.

The main overlook offers a large sign, indicating the highest point on the parkway.  This sign is a popular photo opportunity for those traveling the parkway, and especially for those riding motorcyles.

Devil's Courthouse

For a more challenging hike and a breathtaking view, head to Devil's Courthouse, located at Milepost 422.4.  This 5,720-foot peak offers a panoramic view of four states – North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.

The hike to the summit is short, steep and rewarding.  The views from viewing platform the top are some of the best in the area.  This should definitely be on your "must stop" list as you travel along this section of the Parkway.

Graveyard Fields

Another popular stop, and one of our favorites, along this section of the Blue Ridge Parkway is Graveyard Fields.

Located at Milepost 418.8, this unique area features a landscape of rounded granite boulders, cascading waterfalls, and fields of wildflowers and wild blueberry bushes.

The name "Graveyard Fields" comes trees that fell during a bad storm many years ago.  The stumps of the trees remained for years, and moss grew on them.  From a distance, they resembled grave stones.  

The area is a popular spot for hiking, fishing, and picnicking, and it's especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color.  There are also two easy to access and beautiful waterfalls here.  Lower Falls is also a very popular swimming hole.

In the late summer and early Fall, you can also visit here to pick wild blueberries.  Speaking of Fall, Graveyard fields, due to the unique vegetation is one of the most beautiful places for Fall color, with lots of vivid reds and oranges.  The area is also one of the first places on the parkway to turn color each year.

Looking Glass Rock Overlook

The Looking Glass Rock Overlook at Milepost 417, is one a popular and scenic stop on the Parkway. The overlook offers the best views of the impressive Looking Glass Rock, a massive granite dome that rises over 3,900 feet in elevation.

The rock is named from the ice that forms along the smooth rocky cliffs and the way it reflects the sunlight.

For those interested in hiking, the Looking Glass Rock Trail is a popular and challenging hike that leads to the top of the rock. The trail is approximately 6.5 miles round-trip and features steep inclines and rocky terrain, but offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains and forests.  The trail is not accessible from the overlook.

This overlook is also the location for the trailhead to the Skinny Dip Falls area, and the well known "Dragon Tree".   The trailhead is located across the parkway from the overlook.  Skinny Dip Falls was an incredibly popular natural waterfall and swimming area, but was all but destroyed in the floods of 2021.

Pisgah Inn and Mount Pisgah

The Pisgah Inn and nearby Mount Pisgah are both popular destinations to visit when traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesville NC.

Pisgah Inn is a seasonal historic inn, restaurant, and gift shop located at Milepost 408.7 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The inn offers gorgeous panoramic views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as nice accommodations and delicious food at their very popular restaurant. Visitors can stay overnight to enjoy the peaceful and scenic mountain setting and a top notch meal (only guests with overnight reservations can dine at the restaurant).

Mount Pisgah is located nearby on the Parkway as well, and is a popular hiking destination. The mountain features a challenging 1.5-mile hike to the summit, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, forests and Asheville NC. The hike is steep and rocky, but well worth the effort for the incredible views from the top.

In addition to hiking, visitors to the area can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, camping, and picnicking.  In fact there is a really nice picnic area at the Mount Pisgah parking area and overlook.

The Folk Art Center

If you need a break from driving along the parkway, be sure to stop at the Folk Art Center in Asheville NC, located at Milepost 382.

This historic center showcases the work of local artisans and craftspeople. You can browse handmade pottery, textiles, jewelry, and more, and even watch artisans at work in the studios. The center also offers a variety of educational programs, workshops and musical performances during peak season.

Nearby, you can also explore the many things to do in Asheville NC, including the famous and historic Biltmore Estate, a victorian-age mansion and gardens built by George Vanderbilt in the late 1800s. The estate features guided tours, hiking trails, a variety of wonderful dining and shopping options, and luxury hotels to stay in.

Blue Ridge Parkway - Waynesville to Cherokee

The Waynesville to Cherokee section of the Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful drive that showcases the pure beauty of the Ridge Ridge Mountains. This popular section of the parkway covers over 50 miles and winds and weaves visitors through some of the most stunning scenery in the region.

Starting just outside of Waynesville, the drive offers breathtaking views of the forests and mountains, with plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the scenery at a number of overlooks. You'll also pass several hiking trails (including the famous Mountains-To-Sea Trail), picnic areas, and scenic overlooks where travelers can stretch their legs, soak in the beauty of these mountains, and of course grab some amazing photos. 

As the parkway winds its way towards Cherokee, visitors will pass by the famous Waterrock Knob area, which offers nearly 360 degree and long distance views of the surrounding Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains.

Soon after, you'll pass the entry and access point for Maggie Valley NC, home of the now closed Ghost Town in the Sky amusement park.  Maggie is a small, quiet and beautiful mountain town full of shops, restaurants, and attractions.   If you're lucky, you'll see Miss Maggie!

The drive ends in Cherokee, a vibrant town known for its rich Native American heritage and cultural attractions.   This is also the entrance area for Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Mount Lyn Lowry Overlook

The Mount Lyn Lowry overlook is one of many scenic overlooks on the Parkway and located at Milepost 446.7.  The overlook offers beautiful views, and a view of a mountain, which has a story.

The overlook itself is named after Mount Lyn Lowry, which rises to the east of the overlook.  The overlook is at an elevation of  5,605 feet, one of the taller overlooks on the Parkway.   Near the top, on the side of a mountain is a lighted cross.

Mount Lyn Lowry and the Lyn Lowry cross are named after a young girl named Lynn Lowry, who passed away at the age of 15 from leukemia in 1962. The cross was erected in her memory by her parents and has become a treasured landmark in the region, attracting visitors who come to pay their respects and hike to the cross to enjoy the stunning views from the summit of Mount Lyn Lowry. 

Waterrock Knob

One of the most popular stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesville is Waterrock Knob.

Located at Milepost 451.2, Waterrock Knob is a 6,292-foot peak that offers nearly 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. The parking area and overlook is a popular spot for sunrises and sunsets, and on clear days you can see as far as Tennessee and Georgia. 

This is a fantastic spot for those wanting incredible long distance and wide open views, without requiring a hike or long walk.  The views are available from the parking area, and it's handicap accessible.

Waterrock Knob features a visitor center, a hiking trail to the top "the knob", access to the Mountains to Sea Trail, and picnic tables.

Soco Falls

Just off The Blue Ridge Parkway, is a small parking area at the trailhead for Soco Falls.  The parking lot only holds a handful of cars.   A short and moderate trail leads down to a viewing platform for the stunning Soco Falls.

Soco Falls is formed by two creeks flowing together into one waterfall, and it's gorgeous.    For those seeking better views or photos, you can take a "scramble" trail down the bottom.    This waterfall is truly a hidden gem.

Maggie Valley

Maggie Valley is a charming town located in western North Carolina, just a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a popular destination for travelers who are driving the parkway, as it offers a range of attractions and amenities that make it a convenient and enjoyable place to stop.

One of the main attractions in Maggie Valley is the Wheels Through Time Museum, which houses a collection of vintage motorcycles and other rare vehicles. The museum is a must-visit destination for anyone with an interest in automotive history or antique motorcycles.

Another popular attraction in Maggie Valley is the Cataloochee Ski Area, which offers skiing and snowboarding during the winter months. The ski area also features a variety of other activities, including snow tubing, ice skating, and snowshoeing.

In addition to its attractions, Maggie Valley also offers a range of restaurants, shops, and accommodations that cater to travelers. There are several hotels, motels, and cabins in the area, as well as a variety of restaurants that serve up local specialties like barbecue and Southern comfort food.

Balsam Mountain Road

Balsam Mountain Road is a scenic drive that connects the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in western North Carolina. For those traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway, taking a detour onto Balsam Mountain Road can provide a unique and rewarding experience.

There are some outstanding overlooks along the road, along with a remote and popular campground called Milehigh Campground.   If you drive to the end of Balsam Mountain road, there is a campground and hiking trails.   This is also the starting location for the rought and rustic back mountain drive along Heintooga Round Bottom Road.

One of the highlights of driving down Balsam Mountain Road is stopping at the Masonic Monument.  Just before you enter the Great Smoky Mountains National Park there is a Masonic stone monument that was built in 1938. The monument contains rocks from most US states and many different places around the world.   .

Balsam Mountain Road is also a popular spot for Elk to hang out as well, and if you're lucky you might just see some!

Cherokee

The Parkway begins at MP0 at the boundry between the Cherokee Nation and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.   When the parkway ends, go left to head in Cherokee. Cherokee is a great destination and offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of the Cherokee Nation. 

Cherokee is home to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, which houses a vast collection of artifacts and exhibits that showcase the history and culture of the Cherokee people. Here, visitors can learn about the tribe's customs, traditions, and daily life through interactive displays, audio-visual presentations, and guided tours.

Cherokee is also known for its many outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing, and tubing. The Oconaluftee River and the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park offer a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking trails, fishing spots, and scenic drives.

One of the main attractions at Cherokee is the Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort, which features a wide range of gaming options, as well as numerous restaurants, shops, and entertainment options.

Finally, if you're interested in Cherokee art and crafts, be sure to visit the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, a cooperative that showcases the work of local Cherokee artisans. Visitors can browse a variety of traditional and contemporary items, including pottery, baskets, jewelry, and textiles.

Cherokee also has plenty of shopping options and restaurants to choose from as well.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Elk!

Instead of going left into Cherokee, to head into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, go right.  You'll see the Oconoluftee Visitor Center, the main east side entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  

The Visitor center is a great place to stop and take a break.  They have a welcome center for the National Park, restrooms, snacks, a nature museum, and and outdoor farm museum.  The farm museum contains historic original buildings from all over the park.  In the peak summer season, they even have live displays and animals.

This area, especially the fields around the visitor center, have become very popular with the Elk found the eastern portions of the park.   If you arrive here early in the morning or late in the day, you can often see Elk in the large fields surrounding the visitor center.   Seeing the Elk is a real treat.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a natural continuation of your scenic journey along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is the perfect lead in to our next featured scenic drive.

Tips for Visiting the Blue Ridge Parkway

We travel the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesville often, especially the sections from Waynesville to Asheville and from Maggie Valley to Cherokee.   During our numerous travels, we've learned a few tips we want to share with you, to help you make your visit more enjoyable and that will help you make the most out of your visit:

Time your visit - The Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a unique experience. Consider visiting in the fall for vibrant foliage, spring for wildflowers, or summer for pleasant weather and lots of green foliage.   If you prefer to avoid the crowds, visiting during non-peak times, and espeically the winter.  Of course some of all of the Parkway can be closed during the winter, depending on weather conditions, so make sure you check to be sure the locations you are visiting are open.

Plan your visit -  Before heading out, check the weather forecast, road conditions, and any parkway closures or alerts. This will help you prepare accordingly and ensure a smooth journey.  We also highly recommend reading this guide, and our larger Blue Ridge Parkway Travel Guide on our Blue Ridge Mountain Life website.  Failing to plan, could result in you missing out on many things to see and do.

Drive safely -  Adhere to speed limits, watch for wildlife crossings, and be cautious on winding roads. Keep an eye out for cyclists and hikers, and use designated pull-off areas for scenic stops.  If you want to drive slow and enjoy the scenery, please pull over to allow traffic to go around you.  

Explore hiking trails - The parkway offers numerous hiking trails near Waynesville. Consider exploring popular trails and areas like the Graveyard Fields, Black Balsam Knob, Waterock Knob, and Devil's Courthouse.   Be sure to read over our Day Hiking Essentials to know what to bring with you when day hiking.

Pack essentials - Bring some basic essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable walking or hiking shoes, and layers of clothing.   You should expect weather conditions that vary greatly.   You may enter the Parkway from WAynesville and it will be close to 80, by the time you get up into the higher elevations it could be in the 60s and raining.  

Enjoy scenic overlooks - Take advantage of the parkway's numerous scenic overlooks.  Many provide breathtaking and long range views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Pull over at these spots, capture photos, and just enjoy the pure beauty for a few minutes.

Visit nearby attractions -  Waynesville and the Parkway are surrounded by charming towns, historic sites, and outdoor destinations. Consider exploring attractions like the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center near Asheville for additional information and exhibits.

Respect nature and wildlife - The Blue Ridge Parkway is home to many different species of wildlife and plants. Respect them by staying on designated paths, not disturbing plants or animals, and properly disposing of waste.   Always Leave No Trace. 

Gas and Restrooms - You'll want to be sure to have a full tank of gas (or a full charge for electric) before traveling the parkway.  Towns with Gas stations can be few and far between, depending on the section you are traveling.    Related, restrooms are sparse as well.  In both cases plan ahead and be prepared.

The Buttered Biscuit

The Buttered Biscuit is our go to place for breakfast in Waynesville NC.   The atmosphere and decor are simple and basic, but the food, well it's amazing.  

The Buttered Biscuit is known locally for their huge "cat head" biscuits with gravy.  They are also well known for their other biscuit sandwiches, pancakes, and waffles. 

The menu at The Buttered Biscuit features a variety of classic breakfast options, as well as some unique dishes like the "Breakfast Bowl," which is a large bowl with hash browns, eggs, sausage or bacon, and gravy.

Our personal favorites are: the breakfast bowls, scrambled eggs with corned beef hash (fried crispy) with biscuits and crazy, and their French Toast.  We love to get the pancakes every so often as well.

The service is friendly, portions are huge, and the prices are very reasonable, making the Buttered Biscuit a great place to start your day.  Others must agree, because it's constantly packed!

Beach Mountain Diner

If you're looking for a classic American diner experience, Beach Mountain Diner in the Hazelwood section of Waynesville is the place to be. 

This retro-style diner serves up all the breakfast classics, including eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, and waffles. The portions are generous, and the prices are affordable.  They even have multiple options of Eggs Benedict.

Beach Mountain Diner is the newest breakfast spot on this list, but has quickly become one of our favorites, and a favorite of locals and visitors as well.  

The atmosphere is cozy and nostalgic, with vintage décor and a jukebox that plays oldies. The Beach Mountain Diner is a great spot for a casual breakfast with friends or family.   

Kornerstone Kafe

For a great breakfast experience, head over to the Kornerstone Kafe.  This charming café serves up all of your breakfast favorites, including omelets, pancakes, French toast, sandwiches, and even breakfast wraps. 

The cafe offers a welcoming atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating options. The interior is decorated with a mix of vintage and modern decor, creating a unique and comfortable ambiance.  Service is excellent and friendly.

Breakfast prices are very reasonable for good old home style food.  Exactly what you would expect at Mama's house.

Crepe and Custard

If you're in the mood for something sweet, the Crepe and Custard is the place to be. This cute Crepe Cafe in Lake Junaluska specializes in sweet and savory crepes, as well as homemade custards.

The menu features a variety of unique crepe options, including the "Maple Bacon" and the "Strawberry Nutella." The service is friendly, and the prices are reasonable.   If you are looking for Gluten Free options, this is the place for you.  They offer a number of Gluten free options.

The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed, with both indoor and outdoor seating options.  The restaurant is also lakeside offering incredible views of Lake Junaluska.   This makes for a great stop after talking a morning walk on the lake, to relax, eat some wonderful crepes and drink a warm cup of coffee.

Haywood 209 Cafe

Last but not least, the Haywood 209 Cafe is a popular breakfast spot located just outside of Waynesville in Clyde, just a few miles outside of Waynesville and just off I-40. 

This cozy restaurant serves a variety of breakfast options, including omelets, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy. The portions are generous, and the prices are affordable.   They also have some specialities, including a Philly Omelet, 209 Breakfast Burrito, and Breakfast bowls.

The service is friendly, and the atmosphere is laid back and casual. The Haywood 209 Cafe is a great spot for a hearty breakfast before a day of exploring the area.

A Day Out in Waynesville NC

The Ten Acre Garden - Pizza and Produce

The Ten Acre Garden is a sustainable farm in nearby Canton NC. Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples, peaches, plums, cherries, asparagus, garlic, and other organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs are grown on the farm. A small herd of grass-fed cattle and a flock of free-range chickens supply fresh eggs on the farm.

Ten Acre Farm also includes a farm stand where visitors can buy the farm's fresh products.

In addition to their locally grown produce, a key attraction for the farm in recent years is their Pizza and special events.   The farm has a number of special events throughout the year, notably their Fall Festival, which has food and live entertainment.   

10 Acre Farm has become most well-known, ironically for their Pizza.   How does a farm and Pizza connect you ask?   Well, the owners built a brickoven Pizza for themselves and friends.  They decided to open that up the public, and offer specialty Pizza's on Friday evenings during prime season.   Pizzas are free, however they ask for a donation to the farm. 

Why Pizza on a farm?  Well, in addition to it being fresh and delicious, they also offer live entertainment, picnic tables, and large fields for the kids to play in.  You'll be surrounded by beautiful farm land and nearly 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains as well.   You can even BYO beer or wine to enjoy with your pizza.

On a typical summer Saturday evening, you'll find lots of families and friends hanging out, enjoying some pizza over a bottle of wine, while the kids play in the fields, and with the farm dogs.   There is often live entertainment, but even when there isn't, spontaneous jam sessions often break out in the evening around the fires.

Pizza and a farm - It's the perfect combination for a mountain summer evening.  Be sure to visit The Ten Acre Garden, it's just one of many hidden gems near Waynesville NC.

Apples and More at Barber Orchards Fruit Stand

Did you know the Waynesville has it's own local apple orchard and fruits stand?   It does and many don't even realize it.  Barber Orchards Fruit Stand is a family-owned business here in Waynesville, and has been growing and selling Apples for generations. Their orchards and fruit stand is situated in a beautiful location just outside of Waynesville and surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains.  They are open seasonally from April through November.

The orchard specializes in a variety of apples, including Honeycrisp, Rome, Golden Delicious, and Gala. They also offer other fruits such as peaches, nectarines, plums, strawberries, and blackberries, depending on the season.  All the fruits sold in the orchard are grown locally and are hand-picked.

In addition to apples and other fruits, the orchard also offers a wide range of homemade baked goods such as apple pies, turnovers, fried apple pies, apple donuts, and apple fritters. They also sell homemade jams, jellies, preserves and of course apple cider.   

The apple donuts are just beyond delicious.  Be sure to pay them a visit, pick up some fresh apples and fruit, and a few baked goods as well.

Elk in Cataloochee Valley

Cataloochee Valley is a picturesque valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, just outside of Waynesville. The valley is well-known for its beauty, rich cultural, natural history, and Elk.   When visiting, you'll also find historic structures, additional wildlife, and breathtaking views.   A trip to Cataloochee Valley is like going back in time for a few hours.

The Cherokee Indians first inhabited in the valley, and it eventually became a popular hunting place for European settlers. Several people settled in the valley in the late 1800s, and the remote settlement grew to include a school, church, and post office.  The citizens of Cataloochee Valley produced fruit, crops and lumber for area towns, Waynesville in particular.

As part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Visitors to Cataloochee Valley can now explore the historic buildings and learn about the area's history, as well as enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic driving into Cataloochee Valley.

Elk, black bears, and white-tailed deer are among the wildlife that call the valley home.  In fact, Elk were re-introduced into the Great Smoky Mountains in the early 2000s, in Cataloochee Valley.

The drive to the Valley is an adventure, but well worth it! 

Culture at Folkmoot International Festival 

Waynesville has an annual festival called Folkmoot that is incredibly popular, and attractors visitors from all over the world. Since its inception in 1983, the festival has gained popularity in the area and annually welcomes thousands of guests.

Dancers and musicians from various nations perform traditional folk dances and music from their own nations during the event. Visitors have the chance to take part in the festival's celebration of human diversity and learn about the rich cultural history of various nations.

The festival is dedicated to fostering intercultural dialogue and understanding as well as to protecting and disseminating the rich cultural legacy of the world.

The main event, Folkmoot Summerfest is generally in July of each year and lasts several days, including a celebration in downtown Waynesville with music, dancing, vendors, crafts and more.

Lake Junaluska is a popular resort and conference center located just outside of Waynesville NC. The lake itself is a man-made body of water surrounded by scenic mountains, and it is a popular destination for walking, running, boating, fishing, and swimming.

Discover Soco Falls

Soco Falls is truly a hidden gem, located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, not far from Waynesville NC, and just inside the Cherokee Nation boundry.   Access the small easy to miss parking area for the trailhead.  The short, but not well maintained trail will take you down to the wooden observation deck for beautiful views of this duel and majestic waterfall.

For better views, take the scurry trail down the base of the falls.  This option is only recommended for those with climbing and hiking skills.

Go Back in Time at Mast General Store and Downtown Waynesville

The original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis NC opened in 1883 to serve the local area.  The store grew and additional stories were opened in various different mountain towns, including Waynesville NC in 1991.

Mast General Store in Waynesville is located in downtown in an old department store from the 1930 that has been carefully preserved and restored over the years, and it features a charming and nostalgic atmosphere that harkens back to a bygone era.

Mast General stores are  renowned for their selection of traditional clothing, outdoor gear, and household goods, as well as its old-fashioned candy counter, which offers a variety of classic sweets and treats.  They are even contained in old Barrels, just like the old "five and dime" stores.

While visiting the store, be sure explore the rest of historic downtown and all of the wonderful and locally owned shops.  You won't regret it and just might feel like you've been transported back in time to a Norman Rockwell painting.

Tour Waynesville's Historic Farmers Market

The Haywood County Historic Farmers Market is a weekly farmers market in Waynesville and located in the Hart Theater Parking lot . The market is open from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Wednesdays from April through October.

The market features over 40 different vendors selling a variety of local produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, crafts, plants, and more. The market is a great place to find fresh, seasonal food and products, and to support local farmers and artisans.  You'll even find food and drinks available.

The Farmer's Market is wheelchair accessible, pet-friendly, and there is free parking right next to the market itself.

Stand in Awe at Waterrock Knob

While well-known to locals, Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just outside of Waynesville NC isn't as well known to visitors. Waterrock Knob is a true hidden gem for those looking for stunning panoramic and high elevation views of the surrounding Blue Ridge and Great Smoky mountains.   Due to the nearly 360 degree view, Waterock Knob is the ideal location to view both a sunrise and a sunset.

Waterrock Knob is accessible via a short access road directly off the Parkway between Waynesville and Maggie Valley NC at MP451.2.  The access road will take you up to the main parking area, where you will find the incredible views, bathrooms, a visitor center and gift shop, picnic tables, and access to the hiking trail to the top of the knob.

Waterrock Knob is  is a great for the entire family to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views.   Kids can play in the fields, and the picnic tables make for a great picnic destination.    For those more adventurous families, you can hike up the .5 mile trail to the top of Waterrock Knob.   It's a great hike, but very steep.  In fact, we doubt you'll find a more steep .5 trail anywhere.

Safety First!

When visiting mountain swimming holes, it's important to keep in mind that they are natural and can be dangerous. Always use caution and pay attention to signs and warnings posted in the area.  There are generally no life guards, and you are often a good distance away from medical assistance.   Always be aware that below the water, there can be rocks, fallen trees and other debris that you cannot see.

Always respect the environment and leave no trace behind, so that these swimming holes and areas can be enjoyed by others for generations to come.

Deep Creek

Deep Creek is a popular area located within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in western North Carolina, near the town of Bryson City NC. The area is known for its scenic waterfalls, streams, and hiking trails, and is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the main attractions in Deep Creek is Deep Creek itself, which offers easy access to the creek and a series of three waterfalls that can be accessed Deep Creek Trail.  Deep Creek between Indian Creek Falls and Tom Branch Falls is very popular for both swimming and tubing.

To access the creek, park in one of the parking areas for Deep Creek Trail or in the picnic area.   The creek itself is right next to the trail, and there are numerous access points for swimming and wading in the cool clear waters of Deep Creek.

For those wanting to tube, tubes can be rented from multiple vendors on the way into the park.  They will be tied to your vehicle, and can be carried from the parking area, up the trail for tubing.

Lower Falls, Graveyard Fields

The Lower Falls swimming hole at Graveyard Fields is a popular spot for visitors to the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina, near Waynesville NC. It is located at mile marker 418.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and is easily accessible from the Graveyard Fields parking area, along a moderate hiking trail.  The hike to Lower Falls is 0.6 miles.

The Lower Falls swimming hole is created by a series of cascading waterfalls that flow into a deep pool at the base of Lower Falls.  The pool is ideal for swimming on hot summer days. The water temperature is generally very cool and refreshing, and the surrounding scenery is beautiful.   The water flowing from the deep pool makes for more shallow pools below, that are perfect for young children wanting to play in the water as well.

Lower Falls and the entire Graveyard Fields area is a very popular, especially in the summer, so you'll want to get there early or later in the day to avoid the crowds and parking issues.

Looking Glass Falls

One of the most iconic and majestic waterfalls near Waynesville NC is not only a gorgeous roadside waterfall, but also the perfect summer swimming hole.  

Located in Pisgah National Forest, Looking Glass Falls is a beautiful 60' tall waterfall with a large swimming hole at the base.  There is a large parking area just up from the falls, and accessing the waterfall and swimming hole is easy via a short walk down a flight of stairs from the parking area.

Like most mountain swimming holes, the water is chilly, but crisp and refreshing, especially on a hot summer day.

The currents here, due to the strong flowing waterfall can be strong, and we do not recommend climbing on the rocks, which can be very slick.    Fortunately the swimming area is large, so you can move to areas with less current and still enjoy swimming.

This is a very popular location, both for swimming and for viewing the waterfall.  You'll want to get here early or late in the day to avoid the large crowds often found here during the summer.

Midnight Hole

Probably the most epic swimming hole in the Waynesville NC area is located in a remote section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  You'll have to hike out to it, but trust us, it's well worth it.

Midnight Hole features a very large pool area with depths from just a foot or two, to well over 15 to 20 feet.   Water flows into the pool from a 10 foot tall waterfall.  The pool is surrounded by large rocks, that visitors can climb up and jump off.

Midnight hole is accessible from the Big Creek Parking area, along Big Creek Trail.  You'll hike in about 1.5 miles to reach Midnight Hole.   For those looking for a smaller swimming area, with no hike, visit the Big Creek picnic area just off the parking area.  There are lots of shallow wading areas for kids, with picnic areas right next to them.

On your hike up to Midnight hole, there are also a number of smaller swimming holes and waterfalls you can enjoy as well.  It's a gorgeous area and hike.

Moore Cove Falls

Moore Cove Falls is a popular hike and pretty waterfall located in the Pisgah National Forest near Waynesville NC and not far from Brevard NC. 

The waterfall itself is about 50-feet tall and cascades down a rock face into a shallow pool below. Visitors can get up close to the falls and even right up under them by following a short, 0.7-mile trail that begins at a small parking area right off of U.S. Highway 276 between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Brevard NC.

The trail to Moore Cove Falls is easy to moderare in difficulty and family-friendly, with only a moderate incline.  Hikers will enjoy the forest and listening to the sounds of the nearby stream as they make their way towards Moore Cove Falls.  There is also a small creek crossing on the way, with a smaller waterfall and wading areas.

Once at Moore Cove Falls, hikers can take in the view from a wooden viewing deck or go past the deck to the base of the falls, and enjoy the cool mist of the waterfall as it cascades down. There really isn't much of a pool to swim in, so it's more like a natural shower.  But still makes for a great hike, and a unique way to cool off on a hot summer day.

Sliding Rock

The most well known and by far most popular swimming hole near Waynesville NC and in the Blue Ridge Mountains as a whole is Sliding Rock.    

Sliding Rock is a natural water slide located in  Pisgah National Forest near Waynesville NC. It is and has been for many years, a popular destination for families looking for an exciting, fun and unique outdoor experience.

Sliding rock itself is 60-foot long and descends down to a pool where you drop a few feet into a a 7-foot deep pool of crisp cold water water. The rock is smooth, allowing swimmers to slide down the rock face and plunge into the refreshing pool below.

Average water temperature year-round is around 55F year-round, making it a popular spot for cooling off during hot summer days.

There is a small fee to enter the area, mostly to cover keeping the area maintained and to pay the life guards, but the small fee is well worth it.  Yes, there are life guards during primary hours during the day and on weekends.

It's important to note that the slide can be very fast and exhilarating, so visitors should exercise caution.  It's important to wear appropriate clothing as well, as sliding down the rocks will quickly wear through standard bathing suit materials.  We strongly recommend wear cut-off jeans. 

Sunburst Swimming Hole

Sunburst Swimming Hole is a popular swimming destination, fishing, and "hang-out" area for locals and visitors that is located in Pisgah National Forest near Waynesville. 

The water a Sunburst Swimming hole is crystal clear and very cool, making it a refreshing spot to cool off during the hot summer months. There is a small "beach area" and numerous large rocks for  sunbathing or to enjoy a picnic.

The water depth varies from just a few feet to over 6 foot, allowing swimmings of different ages and skill levels to enjoy the swimming hole.  There is also a large rock to jump off of, and swinging rope.

Sunburst Swimming Hole is located along the East Fork of the Pigeon River and is accessible from just off the road and next to the parking area.  The swimming hole is almost directly across from a public camping area.

Red Leaf River Inn

Red Leaf River Inn is a bed and breakfast located in Waynesville, NC.   The Bed and Breakfast is housed in a beautifully restored historic mansion and offers a comfortable and historic stay for its guests.

1 - Lake Junaluska Lake Trail

The Lake Trail at Lake Junaluska, just outside of Waynesville NC is one of our favorite walking trails.   Some may argue it's not actually a hike, but this paved trail takes you around the lake for 2.3 miles.  The lake trail is relatively flat, and provides beautiful views of the lake, surrounding mountains, and lake wildlife.  You might even see the Bald Eagles that live there!

You can park and start the trail from most of the locations around the lake.   We generally park near the pool or rose path on the main entry road by the Terrace hotel.   You can walk in either direction.   For a longer walk, you can take the extended 3.8 mile loop.   Lake Junaluska Lake Trail is even dog friendly!   

The lake is just minutes from Waynesville.

2 - Waynesville Greenway Park / Richland Creek

Waynesville has been working on extending the Greenway Park over the past 10 years and so far is doing an incredible job with with beautiful greenway that runs along Richland Creek.  

The Greenway follows Richland Creek for 4.8 miles.   You can visit and enjoy this trail either walking or hiking.   The trail begins at the Waynesville Recreation Center and ends near Lake Junaluska.  Along the way, you'll find various recreation areas you can stop and enjoy, as well as creek views and wildlife as well.

3 - Pink Beds

The Pink Beds Loop Trail is a popular hiking trail located in Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. The trail is approximately 5.5 miles long and offers hikers the opportunity to explore a unique ecosystem characterized by dense forests, wildflowers, and grassy meadows.

The trail is well-marked and well-maintained, making it accessible to hikers of all skill levels.  The trail is mainly flat, and can be shorted by a cut-through that is part of the maintained loop trail.   While hiking this easy trail, hikers can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, as well as several small waterfalls and streams.

The trail is named after the pink-colored rhododendron bushes that bloom in the area during the summer months. The Pink Beds Loop Trail is a great way to experience the natural beauty of Pisgah National Forest and is a must-do for any hiking enthusiast visiting the area.

4 - Rough Fork Trail, Cataloochee Valley

Rough Fork Trail is a hiking trail located in Cataloochee Valley part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail is approximately 5.2 miles long out and back trail.  The trail follows Rough Fork Creek, offering hikers the opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty of the valley and its surrounding forests.  

The trail is well-maintained and has an easy to moderate level of difficulty, making it accessible to hikers of various skill levels.

While hiking Rough Fork Trail, hikers can view several historic buildings, including an old homestead and a restored springhouse. The area is also rich in wildlife, and hikers can expect to see a variety of species, including black bears, elk, and deer.

The trailhead is easily accessible, with a parking area located near the beginning of the trail. Rough Fork Trail is an excellent choice for those looking to experience the natural beauty and history of Cataloochee Valley.

5 - Palmer Creek Trail, Cataloochee Valley

Palmer Creek Trail is a hiking trail located in Cataloochee Valley part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail is approximately 7.5 miles long and offers hikers the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the area and creek-side hiking.

The trail is well-maintained and easy to moderate in difficulty.

Palmer Creek Trail follows Palmer Creek through Cataloochee Valley and offers several creek crossings, making it an ideal trail for those who enjoy water features. The area is also rich in wildlife, and hikers might see a variety of species, including black bears, elk, and deer.

The trailhead is easily accessible, with a parking area located near the beginning of the trail. The Palmer Creek Trail is an excellent choice for those looking to experience the natural beauty and history of Cataloochee Valley and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

6 - Moore Cove Falls

The Moore Cove Falls trail is a popular hiking trail and waterfall located in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard NC. The trail is approximately 1.5 miles roundtrip and is considered easy to moderate in difficulty, making it a great option for families or those who are looking for a less strenuous hike.

The trail begins at the Moore Cove Falls parking area off Highway 276 and follows a well-maintained trail through the forest. Along the way, hikers will pass through a beautiful forested area with lush greenery, tall trees, and a variety of native plant species. The trail is marked with signs and is easy to follow.  There is even a smaller waterfall on the way to the larger Moore Cove Falls.

As hikers approach the falls, they will hear the sound of rushing water and soon catch a glimpse of the impressive 50-foot waterfall. The trail leads directly to the base of the falls, providing hikers with an up-close view of the cascading water. The waterfall drops into a shallow pool, making it a great spot to take a refreshing dip on a hot day.

7 - Kephart Prong Trail

Kephart Prong Trail is a popular hiking trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trailhead is located near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center which is easily accessible from Cherokee, NC. The trail is approximately 4.2 miles long and is considered moderate in difficulty.  The trailhead is directly off Newfound Gap Road, the main road through the national park.

The trail follows Kephart Prong stream for most of the way, providing hikers with scenic views of the stream and surrounding dense forest. The trail is well-maintained and marked with signs, making it easy to navigate.

As hikers make their way along the trail, they'll pass through a variety of landscapes, including hardwood forests, rhododendron thickets, and open meadows. There are also several footbridges that cross over the Kephart Prong stream, adding to the picturesque scenery.

At the beginning of the trail, hikers an explore the historic CCC Camp.  The CCC were responsible for building most of the park, and the camp here was one of many throughout the park during its construction and creation.

The shelter is a historic log cabin that was built in the 1930s and is available for hikers to use as a rest stop or overnight stay. 8 - Oconaluftee River Trail

The Oconaluftee River Trail is a scenic hiking trail located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, on the North Carolina side. The trail follows the picturesque Oconaluftee River for 1.5 miles, providing visitors with a peaceful and relaxing hiking experience.

The trailhead is located at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and the trail is relatively easy, with only slight elevation changes along the way. Along the trail, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the river, as well as the surrounding forest and mountains.

The trail is one of two trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where dogs are allowed on a leash.   The river trail is not only easy and beautiful, but dog friendly as well.

9 - Soco Falls

The hike to Soco Falls is short, beautiful and relatively easy.  The hike is located in the Cherokee area of the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. The trailhead is located off of US Highway 19 and is marked with a small sign for Soco Falls.

The parking area is small, and only accommodates about 10 cars at most.

The hike itself is a short, quarter-mile trek on a fairly well-maintained trail that leads visitors to the stunning Soco Falls overlook. This is a wooden deck that provides a really nice view of the falls from slightly above.  Along the way, hikers will encounter beautiful views of the surrounding forest and streams.

Once at the falls, visitors can enjoy the sight and sound of the two-tiered waterfall that plunges into a deep pool below. The falls are surrounded by lush vegetation, including rhododendron and mountain laurel, making for a beautiful and serene experience.

For those more adventurous and sure footed, you can use the climbing ropes to go down the steep ridge to the bottom of the falls, which provide the best views and photography opportunities.   This part of the trail is dangerous though, so use your judgement.

It's important to note that the trail can be slippery, especially after rain, and visitors should exercise caution when approaching the falls.  Also, the tops of the falls are easy to access, but visitors should avoid getting near the top, as one slip could result in serious injury or death.

10 - Wildcat Falls Trail

The hike to Wildcat Falls is an easy to moderate hike located in the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina. The trailhead is located off of US Highway 215 and is marked with a small sign for Wildcat Falls.

The hike itself is approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) round trip and features a mix of uphill and downhill sections, as well as some rocky terrain. The trail follows the West Fork of the Pigeon River, offering beautiful views of the river and surrounding forest.

Once at Wildcat Falls, visitors can enjoy the sight of the stunning 50-foot waterfall, which cascades down a series of rocks into a pool below.  The falls flow below an old concrete bridge that is literally out in the middle of the woods.  It is what remains of the logging operations there were here many years ago.   In addition to the bridge, there are also several areas for visitors to sit and enjoy the falls, making for a peaceful and relaxing experience.  

Overall, the hike to Wildcat Falls is a great option for those looking for a moderately challenging hike with a rewarding waterfall view in the Pisgah National Forest located off Highway 215.

11 - Max Patch Loop Trail

The Max Patch Loop Trail is an easy to modate hiking trail located in the Pisgah National Forest, near Hot Springs, North Carolina. The trailhead is located off of NC-1182 and is marked with a sign for Max Patch.

The hike itself is approximately 2.4 miles (3.9 km) round trip and features a mix of uphill and downhill sections, as well as rocky terrain. The trail leads hikers to the summit of Max Patch, which is a 4,629-foot grassy bald offering stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains.

Along the way to the top, hikers will pass through a beautiful forest and encounter several open areas with beautiful views. Once at the summit, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains, including the Great Smoky Mountains to the south.

Overall, the hike along the Max Patch Loop Trail is a must-see for those looking for a beautiful and easy hike with breathtaking mountain views in the Pisgah National Forest.   If you love a good sunset, Max Path really delivers.  Just be aware that visitors can only stay 1-hour past sunset.

12 - Black Balsam Knob

The Black Balsam Knob hike is a scenic and moderately challenging trail located in the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina. The trailhead is located off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, near milepost 420, and is a very popular area and hiking trail.

The hike itself is approximately 1.5 miles round trip and features a mix of uphill and downhill sections, as well as rocky terrain. The trail leads hikers to the summit of Black Balsam Knob, which is a 6,214-foot mountain offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Along the way, hikers will pass through a beautiful forest and encounter several open areas with beautiful views. Once at the summit, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains, including the Great Smoky Mountains to the west.

It's important to note that the summit of Black Balsam Knob is exposed and can be windy, so visitors should bring a jacket and wear appropriate footwear.
